When I was in Tokyo Andy from Fixed-Mag and 14 Bike Co. gave me this tire to try out. It is a Continental Super Sport Plus. Continental says they had Track Bikes in mind when redesigning this Conti Classic. Like the very popular Vittoria Randonneur the Super Sport Plus uses a belt(YELLOW) under tread to push away debris rather than letting it puncture through. This belt also allows one to ride the tire even after wearing through the top layer of rubber.
The Super Sport Plus definitely did its job of keeping me puncture free for the whole time I was riding it. I rode the tire for about two months before wearing through the entire top surface. Pretty good for a tire with not much extra rubber on top for skidding. I usually find that riding thinner tires like this and the Soma Everwear usually means compromised sidewall strength. But surprisingly enough the sidewall held it's ground through out the life of the party! And party we did...I didn't quite get Prolly on it but I definitely but it through the ringer of yesteryear Track Bike classics. Wheelies, skids, bunny hops, hill bombs, whip skids...you name it. I even logged some pretty serious miles on this thing...lots of climbing(I also had to come down)...lots of riding. For the most part this tire handled beautifully.
Things I didn't like about the tire were few but still there. The Conti Super Sport Plus definitely doesn't slow you down like some of the other tires out there adopted by Tarck Bikes. But many of the old school cats still doing skid combos and smooth whips will definitely find this to be an advantage. Just hope that light is always green or you already have a line planned out. That's about it performance wise. And my only other complaint is wear it's made. This tire is produced in Asia rather than Germany to keep the cost down. Yeah...it's a skidding tire. We only use them for about a month. But with quality tires like the Rimbo being made in it's country of origin at an affordable price...you think someone else could do the same. If this tire is $20 when it comes out I will feel a little better about all this. But I highly doubt it will be.
