Newbaum's Cloth bar tape is made here in the USA of highly durable milled cotton cloth using eco-friendly dyes. A traditional slightly tacky adhesive back is used for easy application, similar to other cloth tapes like Velox Tressostar or Toshi. Newbaum's either comes in individual rolls of 10ft X 3/4" or POP boxes of ten. There are fourteen different colors to choose from with many deviating from norm supplied by other brands. At the moment I think Merry Sales is the only distributor for Newbaum's but if your LBS doesn't use Merry Sales you can order directly from Newbaum's.

Big Tone Tone has had his Benotto wrapped up with Newbaum's for about a week now and so far so good. It is soft...feels good on the hands and seems to repel dirt and grime nicely. But a week is nowhere near enough time to test a bar tape's strength. It's been ridden in the rain but still hasn't been crashed(the true test of a bar tapes strength). But Big Tone Tone has a real hard time keeping his two tires to the ground once a few beers are added to the equation...so I will report back soon with the crash report.

Polipo Pedal Straps!

I didn't know how this was going to turn out because I had never really ridden any kind of foot-restraint like this before. In reality Prorry over at the Tarck Up CMX probably would have been better off doing this write up but that might have caused some kind of breech in contract with him and Hold Fast Straps. I know he ran into some problems after writing the DIY Foot restraint jam on Wired's Fixie Fanatics page. So I will do my best.

At first I was riding these on my everyday Tarck/Track. This bike sometimes has risers but mostly drops. In the summer I usually throw risers on for rack season! So I may try the Polipo "Straps" on the Tarcker when my back starts getting sweaty. But while the bike has drops I just couldn't bring myself to ride or even look at my bike with the BMX pedal next to my skinny 23c tires and drop-bars. It was just a monstrosity! So I built up a fixed-wheel Cyclocross bike just to test out the straps. And test them I did...on and off-road.

One thing I learned about this kind of foot retention system is that you have to have them adjusted perfectly to keep your pedal from rotating underneath you when pulling up on the straps. I admit they were a little loose in the beginning and I was getting annoyed with the pedal rotation while climbing or skidding. But after a quick adjustment that was all fixed.

One thing I really liked about the Polipo "Straps" was the comfort while climbing and skidding. The straps are quite wide and very stiff but also malleable to the force of pulling up on the straps...shaping the strap to your shoe.

The Polipo "Straps" were also very easy to install unlike some of the other pedal straps out there. This was great for me being a rookie at Pedal Strap 101. But also caused me some grief when I had to chase a kid down the street because they were so easy to remove from my pedal. Luckily I was able to catch him. If not this review would never have been finished.

They held up great in the rain, through the mud and on the dry and dusty streets of Los Angeles. So if you live in a no-theft zone and like to ride BMX style pedals these would definitely work out great for you. But once the kids realized what you got you may need to check on your bike a couple times through the night.
