FRAME 11

Back with a new FRAME Interview, we managed to catch up with a local cycling hero. We think maybe not that many people have heard of him, especially overseas and with his career being in a golden era 30 years ago, its of an older generation of cycling The person we managed to meet was Hung Chung Yam. An amateur cyclists, his story of coming from absolutely nothing to go onto participating in the UCI World Championships in Italy, has inspired many many people, with his story spread throughout the local media in Hong Kong over many years.

As a cycling ambassador in Hong Kong now, we got to hear about his story first hand, his travels abroad, competing as a solo cyclist and life after cycling.

Has anyone even used it?

Well...there isn't anyway to find out if a tool works unless you use it. So I would highly suggest pulling them off your desk and trying it out. Don't worry about getting the tool dirty because it cleans off quite nice but if your worried about keeping the packaging clean I would definitely keep it away from the tool or your fingers while using the tool.

First thing, a few people asked what's the point without a chainwhip? You don't need a chainwhip when using the Rotafix method of tightening a cog down. You can read about it ...HERE! And I shot an image...HERE!

Lockrings come loose and it's definitely not a tool most people carry on everyday rides because of the size and weight of it. The Union Foundry Rotafixer tool can solve this problem and be carried from a keychain quite easily.

When using the tool you must first tighten your cog down using the traditional Rotafix method or else your just waisting your time because no matter how tight you get the lockring it will still come loose if the cog isn't tight. After tightening the cog down, then slide the wheel out and slip the Rotafixer over the lockring. After all this install the wheel and the use the Rotafix method only this time fold the chain over its self so the top half the chain is trapped between the Roatfixer and the bottom half. Then push the wheel forward until the lockring is tight.

Definitely easier said then done. The Rotafixer tends to slide off the lockring pretty easily. Being that the tool is circular and unadjustable they had to make the tool so it could fit all kinds of track lockrings. I tried it on Dura-Ace, Paul, Philwood and Mavic lockrings. The lockring I had the most trouble with was the Philwood because of it's larger ring that isn't as wide as the lockring where the tool normally rest and I had the best luck with the ultra thick Paul lockring.

The tool works and in a pinch it could be a absolute lifesaver. I definitely wouldn't give up a normal lockring tool at home or in a shop but will most definitely always have this tool in my bag. And if your wondering how to do any of this without a bike-stand the tool probably isn't for you. For everyone else just flip your bike upside down. This way you can scratch you tape, scuff your saddle and get get your tool dirty all in one go. Bikes are tools, the Rotafixer's a too, meant to be used and meant to get dirty.
